Westby is a small rural community located in the central eastern part of the Riverina region in New South Wales, Australia. It's found along Westby Road, about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) southeast of Pulletop and 18 kilometers (11 miles) north of Little Billabong.
Westby: A Small Community
Westby is a quiet area known for its farming and natural beauty. It's part of the wider City of Wagga Wagga local government area. Even though it's a small place, it has an interesting history, especially linked to its past as a railway town.
Westby's Railway Past
Westby used to be an important stop on a railway line. It had its own railway station, which was the end of the Westby railway line. This railway helped connect Westby to other towns and move goods around.
However, the railway's time in Westby came to an end because of a big bushfire. The last train to arrive in Westby was in January 1952. Even though trains stopped coming to Westby, the line continued to operate for a few more years to Mangoplah, a town about 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the northeast. The entire railway line was officially closed in July 1956. Today, the old railway station is no longer in use, but it remains a reminder of Westby's history.
