Westfield is a small community located in North Carolina, a state in the United States. It's mostly in Surry County, but a tiny part stretches into Stokes County. Even though most of the community is in Surry County, a large part of its postal code area (Zip Code 27053) is actually in Stokes County.

Westfield's History

Westfield was first known as "Tom's Creek." Its name later changed to Westfield because of a special group called the Quakers. The Quakers, also known as the Society of Friends, started a mission here in 1760. They came from a place called New Garden Friend's Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Early Quakers traveled through a spot called Quaker Gap to reach Tom's Creek. They called this area "the western field." This name eventually became "Westfield." A famous person, Kenneth Lowe, grew up in Westfield. He is the president of Scripps Networks Interactive and created the TV channel Home & Garden Television.

Westfield's postal code area (Zip Code 27053) had about 2,811 people living there in the year 2000. About half of the people (50.1%) were male, and the other half (49.9%) were female.

Most of the people (90.9%) were white. About 7.0% were African-American, and 2.8% were Hispanic. A small number (1.4%) were from other races, and 0.5% were from two or more races.

Westfield's Location

Westfield is located 1,160 feet above the level of the sea. In the center of the community, you can find several important places. These include the local post office and the buildings of the old Westfield Elementary School. You'll also see the main building for the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department. The Westfield Friends meeting house and Westfield Baptist Church are also central landmarks.

North Carolina Highway 89, also called Westfield Road, is the main road through the community. This road connects Westfield to Mount Airy and Interstate Highway 74 to the west. To the east, it connects to Danbury, which is the main town of Stokes County. Old Westfield Road also connects the community to Pilot Mountain. From there, you can reach Winston-Salem to the south-east using North Carolina Highway 52. North Carolina Highway 66 also links Westfield to the cities of King and Winston-Salem.
