Westfield Oakridge is a large shopping mall in San Jose, California. It has many stores, restaurants, and a movie theater. In 1998, a company called Westfield America, Inc. bought the mall. After that, its name changed to "Westfield Shoppingtown Oakridge."

The mall has several main stores, called "anchor stores." These include Macy's and Target. It also has other popular stores like Century Theatres (a movie theater), Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, Forever 21, and H&M.

History of Westfield Oakridge

Early Years and Changes

Westfield Oakridge first opened its doors in 1971. When it started, it had three big anchor stores: Macy's, Bullock's, and Montgomery Ward.

In 1983, Bullock's closed all its stores in Northern California. Its spot at Oakridge was then sold to Nordstrom, another department store. Nordstrom opened there in 1985.

A few years later, in 1987, Nordstrom opened a new store at a different mall nearby, Valley Fair. Both Nordstrom stores stayed open for a while. But in 1994, Nordstrom closed its Oakridge store. The building was then sold to Sears.

New Stores and Big Expansion

In 2001, Montgomery Ward went out of business, leaving an empty space in the mall. This space was empty until 2003. Then, it was completely updated and became a two-level Target store. At the same time, Macy's made its store much bigger, adding 75,000 square feet of space.

Westfield started a huge upgrade project in 2002. They spent $150 million to make the mall much larger. This expansion finished in late 2003. It added over 300,000 square feet to the mall.

The expansion brought in new stores like Linens n' Things and a Borders bookstore. A big 20-screen Century Theatres cinema was also added. The mall also got a large food court. A new area with popular restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, and Buca di Beppo was built facing Blossom Hill Road.

Recent Changes and Closures

Over time, some stores faced problems. Borders and Linens n' Things both closed down. Their spaces were then taken by new stores. Nordstrom Rack opened where Linens n' Things used to be. Forever 21 moved from a smaller spot in the mall to the bigger former Borders store. In 2011, a large H&M store opened. It took over a hallway and several smaller store spaces.

In May 2017, Westfield bought the Sears building at Oakridge. On January 4, 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing its Oakridge store. It was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The store closed in March 2018.

Recently, it was announced that a furniture store called Living Spaces will open in 100,000 square feet of the old Sears space. It is not yet known when it will open or what other businesses will use the rest of the large Sears building.
