Westvoorne was a town area, also called a municipality, located on the island of Voorne-Putten in the western part of the Netherlands. It was part of the province called South Holland.
This former municipality covered an area of about 97.48 km2 (37.64 sq mi). A part of this area, about 44.25 km2 (17.09 sq mi), was water. In 2014, about 14,013 people lived there.
Westvoorne was created on January 1, 1980. It was formed when two smaller municipalities, Oostvoorne and Rockanje, joined together. The area included the towns of Oostvoorne, Rockanje, Tinte, and Helhoek.
On January 1, 2023, Westvoorne merged with two other municipalities, Brielle and Hellevoetsluis. Together, they formed a brand new municipality called Voorne aan Zee.
Awards and Recognition
In 2011, Westvoorne received the QualityCoast Gold Award. This award recognized its efforts to become a place that supports sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism means making sure that visitors can enjoy the area without harming the environment or the local community. Because of this award, Westvoorne was chosen to be included in the global atlas for sustainable tourism, called DestiNet.
