Park History: A Splashy Timeline
The 1980s: How It Began
The water park first opened in 1986. Back then, it had a kids' water play area called Dolphins Bay. This area featured many splash pads, a dry playground, seven water slides for children, and a shallow wading pool.
The 1990s: Growing Bigger
In 1992, the park added a large wave pool. This was because Canada's Wonderland was building its own water park, Splash Works. The wave pool at Wild Water Kingdom is still one of the biggest in Canada!
In 1995, two new water slides, Cyclone and Devil's Drop, were built. A Lazy river was also added for a relaxing ride. By 1997, the park had a hot tub, batting cages, and mini golf courses. More slides were built, and popular food places like Pizza Pizza and Mr. Sub started selling food there.
The 2000s: New Rides and Saltwater Fun
In the early 2000s, more exciting water attractions arrived. These included Midnight Express, The Abyss, and Nightrider. The hot tub was removed in 2008. Towards the end of the 2000s, Wild Water Kingdom started focusing on saltwater attractions. In 2009, the Wave Pool was changed to use saltwater. It was the first saltwater wave pool in Canada!
The 2010s: Big Changes and a New Name
In the early 2010s, the park introduced its first mascot, "Hugo the Hippo." A popular Canadian treat, BeaverTails, also opened a spot there. In July 2012, a thrilling new zip line called Face Drop was added. It was the first of its kind in Canada! Face Drop has four long cables, each about 1,200 feet, where you can zoom at speeds up to 50 km/hr.
In May 2015, Wild Water Kingdom announced it would close for the 2015 season. This was for big renovations and expansions. The water park stayed closed for the 2016 season too, as work continued. However, the sports complex and golf driving range remained open.
In July 2016, a company called Premier Parks, LLC bought Wild Water Kingdom. They operate many attractions in Canada and the United States. They announced a complete rebuild of the park. This big project included updating and renaming most of the old slides. They also added five brand new slides and two new attractions just for little kids. The park reopened on June 30, 2017. It was renamed Wet 'n' Wild to match its sister parks around the world.
The 2020s: A Quiet Year
The park did not open for the 2020 season. This was due to rules from the Government of Ontario to help stop the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, 2020 season passes and tickets were made valid for the park's 2021 season. If the park couldn't open in 2021, passes might be extended to 2022. No refunds were given.
Fun Events at the Park
The park has hosted many exciting events over the years:
- June 2012: Wild Water Kingdom held its first "Beach Club Festival." This was a beach-themed party that became an annual event until the park closed for renovations in 2015.
- July 6, 2013: Famous musicians Drake and P. Reign hosted a pool party called Dear America.
- August 10, 2013: The park held an event called "the O Course." This was a challenging obstacle course based on fitness training used by the U.S. Marine Corps. It was designed and led by a former U.S. Marine drill instructor, Sgt. Tony Austin.
- August 30, 2013: Summer Rush, a music event organized by radio station Z103.5, took place at the park.
- September 21, 2015: "The O Course Pink" was a military obstacle course competition. It raised over $25,000 to support Rethink Breast Cancer, a charity.
