Whale Lake is a beautiful lake located in Cook County, Minnesota. This area is often called the "Arrowhead Region" because of its shape on a map. The lake is deep inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is a huge protected area. It's also part of the Superior National Forest, a large forest in northern Minnesota.
Whale Lake sits right at the bottom of Eagle Mountain. This mountain is actually the highest point in all of Minnesota! The lake is pretty remote, meaning it's far from roads. You can only reach it by hiking.
Exploring Whale Lake
Whale Lake is about two miles (3 kilometers) from the closest road. This makes it a quiet and special place to visit. You can get there by taking the Eagle Mountain Hiking Trail from the south. Another way is to use the Brule Lake Trail, which comes from the northwest.
Camping at the Lake
If you love hiking and camping, Whale Lake is a great spot. It has two campsites for visitors. One campsite is on the northern shore of the lake. It's close to where the two main hiking trails meet. The other campsite is a bit further away, near the western shore. These spots are perfect for spending a night under the stars after a long hike.
Fish You Might Find
Whale Lake is home to several types of fish. If you enjoy fishing, you might catch some of these species.
- Bluegill: These are small, colorful fish that are fun to catch.
- Northern Pike: These are larger, predatory fish known for their long bodies and sharp teeth.
- Yellow Perch: These fish have distinctive vertical stripes and are often found in many lakes.
- White Sucker: These are very common fish in Whale Lake. They are known for their mouth, which is shaped like a suction cup.
