Whaley Lake is a cool place located in the town of Pawling. This town is in the southeastern part of Dutchess County in New York State, United States. Guess what? It's the biggest lake in all of Dutchess County!

About Whaley Lake

Whaley Lake is a special kind of lake because it's partly man-made. This means people helped create it. There's a dam at the northern end of the lake that helps control the water.

How the Lake Works

The water from Whaley Lake flows into something called the Fishkill Creek. This creek then travels until it reaches the mighty Hudson River. The Fishkill Creek joins the Hudson River near a city called Beacon, New York. So, Whaley Lake is connected to a much bigger water system!

Getting to the Lake

It's easy to get to Whaley Lake! A road called New York State Route 292 runs right along the south and west sides of the lake. This makes it simple for people to visit and enjoy the views.

Trails and Trains

The eastern side of Whaley Lake has a train track next to it. This track belongs to Metro-North Railroad's Beacon Line. Soon, this area will be part of something really exciting called the Maybrook Trailway. This trailway is a section of the huge Empire State Trail project. The Empire State Trail is a big path that goes all across New York State. It was planned to be finished by 2020, offering a great way to explore the state by foot or bike!
