Discovering the White-Eyed Antwren

This bird was first described by an Austrian bird expert named August von Pelzeln in 1868. He gave it the scientific name Formicivora leucophthalma back then. Later, scientists moved it to a different group of birds, the Epinecrophylla genus.

Different Kinds of White-Eyed Antwrens

There are four known types, or subspecies, of the white-eyed antwren. Each one has slight differences and lives in specific areas:

  • Epinecrophylla leucophthalma dissita was identified by James Bond in 1950. You can find it in Bolivia and Peru.
  • Epinecrophylla leucophthalma leucophthalma was the original type described by August von Pelzeln in 1868. It lives in Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru.
  • Epinecrophylla leucophthalma phaeonota was identified by Todd in 1927. This type is found in Brazil.
  • Epinecrophylla leucophthalma sordida was also identified by Todd in 1927. It also lives in Brazil.

Where the White-Eyed Antwren Lives

The white-eyed antwren's natural habitat is in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. This means it prefers warm, humid forests that are not very high up. These forests are rich in plants and insects, which the antwren needs to survive.
