Crystal Beach (also known as White Crystal Beach) is a small, private community in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. It's a place where many families come to enjoy the summer, often staying for generations.

Discover Crystal Beach

Crystal Beach is a special place located on the beautiful Elk River. It's known for being a great spot for boating and sunbathing. Many people who visit Crystal Beach come from the Delaware Valley area. It's a community that comes alive during the warmer months.

A Family's Dream

Crystal Beach was started in the mid-1930s by Alfred Ernest Green and his wife, Ethel Pearsey Green. They built this community at a place called Reybold's Wharf. Before creating Crystal Beach, the Green family had experience running a traveling carnival and small amusement parks in other states like Delaware and New Jersey.

Building a Fun Resort

The Green family wanted to create a fun, private place for people to rent during the summer. They built many exciting things for visitors. There were bathhouses, a dance hall, and even a bowling alley! They brought children's amusement park rides and an old-fashioned merry-go-round from their traveling carnival. They also built simple wooden cottages for people to rent.

Family Working Together

Alfred and Ethel Green had their son, Kenneth Green, and daughter, Ella Green Crump, help them run the business. Later, their grandchildren also joined in. Everyone in the family worked together to make Crystal Beach a great place for visitors.

Changes Over the Years

After Alfred Ernest Green passed away in the late 1940s, his son Kenneth Green took over the management of Crystal Beach. The early 1950s brought some challenges to the community.

Facing Challenges

In 1954, Hurricane Hazel caused some damage to Crystal Beach. The very next year, in 1955, a big fire also affected the area. These events changed parts of the resort.

New Beginnings

Ethel Green and her daughter Ella Green Crump Spence bought a nearby farm property. They planned to fix it up for their retirement. However, Ella passed away in 1957. Ethel then retired to Florida and passed away in 1959. The farm property went to Ella's children and became a new community called "Elkview Shores."

Crystal Beach continued to be owned by Kenneth and Edna Green. Their two sons, Kenneth "Gene" Green and Alfred "Dickie" Green, helped them manage the resort. Alfred "Dickie" Green passed away in 2010. Today, the community continues to be a special place for families to gather and enjoy the summer.
