White Gum Valley is a suburb located in Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Fremantle. This area sits just behind the main hill that is east of Fremantle.

What's in a Name? The Story of White Gum Valley

The exact reason for the name "White Gum Valley" isn't fully known. However, people believe it was named after a type of tree. This tree is called the tuart tree (Eucalyptus gomphocephala). It's also sometimes known as the white gum tree.

Tuart trees have bark that looks bleached white or light grey. They are native to this area, meaning they naturally grow there.

White Gum Valley has clear borders. To the south, you'll find South Street. Carrington Street is on its eastern side. Stevens Street forms the northern border, and Edmund Street is to the west.

How Did Streets Get Their Names?

Many streets in White Gum Valley are named after important families who were among the first to live in the area. For example, Samson Street is named after Sir Frederick Samson.

Most of the streets that run from north to south are named after towns and places in the Murchison and Mid West parts of Western Australia. These include Yilgarn Street, Wiluna Street, Nannine Avenue, Yalgoo Avenue, Wongan Avenue, and Minilya Avenue.

White Gum Valley Primary School is located in the western part of the suburb. There was also another school, Kim Beazley School, which used to help students with special learning needs. This school closed in 2008. The building was taken down in 2011 to make space for new homes.
