History of the Tavern
The first building on this spot was built in 1652. An English person named Francis Brindley built it. He got the land from his brother-in-law, William Coddington.
In 1673, Francis Brindley sold the land and building to William Mayes. Mr. Mayes made the building bigger. He turned it into a tavern, which is like an old-fashioned restaurant and inn.
Early Uses of the Building
The White Horse Tavern was not just a place to eat and stay. It was also used for important meetings. For example, the Rhode Island General Assembly met there. This was the group of people who made laws for Rhode Island.
The building also served as a courthouse. It was even used as the city hall for Newport. William Mayes got a special license to run the tavern in 1687. His son, William Mayes, Jr., continued to run it in the early 1700s. The name "The White Horse Tavern" was given to it in 1730 by its owner, Jonathan Nichols.
The Tavern During the American Revolution
During the American Revolution, Newport was taken over by British soldiers. People who supported the British were called Tories. Both Tories and British troops stayed at the White Horse Tavern. This was around the time of the Battle of Rhode Island.
Restoration and Modern Use
After many years, the building became a boarding house. It was not kept in good condition. In 1952, the Van Bueren family from Newport helped save it. They gave money to the Preservation Society of Newport. This group worked to fix up the old building.
After it was restored, the White Horse Tavern was sold. It became a private tavern and restaurant again. Today, it is still a popular place for people to eat and enjoy a meal.
