Whitefish Bay is a small community located right on the shore of Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin. It's part of a larger area called Sevastopol. Long ago, Native Americans, probably the Menominee tribe, called this place Ah-Quas-He-Ma-Ganing. This special name meant "save our lives," which shows how important this bay was to them.
A scenic road called Glidden Drive runs along the beautiful shoreline of Whitefish Bay. It was named after a banker named Orrin Glidden. This road is also part of something called Rustic Road 9, which means it's a special, quiet road known for its natural beauty. You can find trails off Glidden Drive that lead to public lands, including Arbter and Schwartz lakes. The Nature Conservancy, a group that protects nature, also has a parking lot here for visitors.
In 1893, a man named Joe Mardin bought some land near Shivering Sands Creek. He built a unique four-story building mostly from wood he found washed up on the shore. He called it Castle Romance. The first floor was for pigs, the second for geese, and the fourth for ducks! The third floor was meant for travelers to stay, with beds and a piano. Later, in 1913, the very first summer cottage along what is now Glidden Drive was built using wood from Castle Romance.
Just south of Whitefish Bay, you'll find a smaller bay called Sherman Bay. It's about half a mile wide and is located between Whitefish Bay and Lily Bay.

Exploring Whitefish Bay's Roads

East Whitefish Bay Road is a main road that leads towards Whitefish Bay. It ends at a "T" intersection where it meets three other roads: Lake of the Woods Road, Glidden Drive, and Moeller Drive. The very end of East Whitefish Bay Road is at Sevastopol Town Park. This park has a nice beach and a public dock where boats can stop.
Before you reach the park, East Whitefish Bay Road crosses paths with Bark Road to the south and South Cave Point Drive to the north. South Cave Point Drive goes over Whitefish Bay Creek right before the creek flows into Whitefish Bay. Bark Road continues south and eventually meets Glidden Drive. Glidden Drive then stretches all the way to the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort condos.

After crossing Whitefish Bay Creek, South Cave Point Drive continues north. It ends at the famous Whitefish Dunes State Park. This state park includes the beautiful wooded areas near the shore.

South of the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort condos, Glidden Drive continues to run along the shore. In this area, there are large wooded sections. These lands are owned by the Nature Conservancy and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. They are open for everyone to enjoy, offering great places to explore nature.
