Whitney is a fascinating place in Skagit County, in the U.S. state of Washington. It is known as an "extinct town," which means it used to be a busy community but now has very few or no people living there. Places like Whitney are often called ghost towns.

Whitney's Past

Whitney was not always called Whitney. Its first name was Padilla. The town was officially "platted" in 1882. This means that people drew up plans for the town, deciding where streets and buildings would go.

A post office opened in Padilla in 1885. This was a very important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office helped connect the town to the rest of the world. It stayed open for many years, but eventually closed in 1914. After the post office closed, the town slowly became less active, leading to it becoming an extinct town.
