History of Whitt
Early Settlers and Growth
The first people settled in Whitt around the mid-1870s. It quickly became a popular spot for farmers. They came to buy goods and socialize. This was because Whitt was on the main route for stagecoaches. These coaches traveled between Weatherford and Jacksboro.
Whitt got its own postal service in 1877. A group of churches, the Methodist Conference, chose Whitt for their high school. This school was called Parker Institute. By the mid-1880s, about 150 people lived in Whitt. The community had three churches, a school, and a weekly newspaper called the Whitt Moon. There were also twenty different businesses.
Whitt kept growing fast. By 1900, its population reached 500 people. However, in the early 1900s, Whitt's population started to shrink. New train tracks were built that went around many small towns in Parker County. This meant fewer people traveled through Whitt. Also, a tough economic time called the Great Depression affected the area.
The Whitt Seminary School
The Whitt Seminary was a special school. It was started in 1880 by leaders of the Christian Church in Whitt. They bought five acres of land to build a community school. The Seminary taught students from elementary grades all the way through high school. It also had a strong music program.
Nearly 200 students came to the school from Whitt and nearby areas. The school served the community for a long time, until 1990. The old Seminary building was used as a Christian church until 1937. After that, it became a community center for everyone to use.
In 1976, the land where the original Seminary school stood was given to the Whitt Cemetery Association. This cemetery has a special historical marker. It is an important cultural landmark in Whitt today.
