Whitton Lake is a beautiful lake found near the village of Nantes in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada. It's special because it's the starting point, or source, of the Noire River. The Noire River then flows into the Grand lac Saint François, which eventually leads to the mighty St. Lawrence River. Think of it as a tiny drop of water from Whitton Lake making a long journey to the ocean!

What Makes Whitton Lake Unique?

Whitton Lake is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) long and 750 meters (2,460 ft) wide. It's not a very deep lake, with a maximum depth of around 2 metres (6 ft 7 in). This means it's quite shallow in most places.

Even though Whitton Lake is close to other lakes like Lake Mégantic, its water takes a different path. Instead of flowing into those nearby lakes, its water travels into a completely different watershed. A watershed is like a giant bowl where all the rain and snowmelt collect and drain into a common river or lake. Whitton Lake's water flows all the way to Grand lac Saint-François, which is the source of the Saint-François River.

Visiting Whitton Lake

If you want to visit Whitton Lake, you can use a road called "Chemin du Lac-Whitton." This road takes you right to the lake. The area around the lake is full of nature and forests, making it a peaceful place to explore. It's a great spot to enjoy the outdoors and see the start of a river's journey.
