The Noire River (which means 'Black River' in French) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Felton River, which then joins the Saint-François River. The Noire River is part of the larger St. Lawrence River system.
This river flows through two towns: Nantes and Saint-Romain. Both towns are located in the Estrie region of Quebec.
Where the Noire River Flows
The Noire River is surrounded by other rivers and lakes. Knowing these helps us understand its journey.
- To the north: The Sauvage River and Grand lac Saint François.
- To the east: The Sauvage River.
- To the south: Gunn stream, the Victoria River, and Turcotte stream.
- To the west: The Felton River.
The River's Journey
The Noire River starts its journey at Whitton Lake. The southern part of this lake has many marshy areas.
From Whitton Lake, the Noire River flows north. It crosses Route 161 South. The river flows for about 6.1 kilometres (3.8 mi) (about 3.8 miles) until it meets a stream coming from the east. After that, it flows west for another 2.3 kilometres (1.4 mi) (about 1.4 miles) until it reaches its end.
The Noire River finally empties into the Felton River. This meeting point is on the east bank of the Felton River, near where the Blanche River also joins. It is also east of Route 161 South.
River Names
This river was once known by a different name. It used to be called the "Whitton River."
The official name, "Rivière Noire," was recorded on December 18, 1979. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the official body for naming places in Quebec.
