Whitworths is a company that sells tasty dried fruits, nuts, and ingredients for baking. They also make snack products! It started way back in 1886 in a town called Irthlingborough in the Northamptonshire area of the United Kingdom. In 2009, about 310 people worked there.
Three brothers named John, Herbert, and Newton Whitworth started the company. They called it Whitworth Bros. It's interesting to know that the Whitworths company today is different from another company nearby, also called Whitworth Bros, which makes flour.
Whitworths even received a special award called a 'Royal Warrant' from the Royal Family! Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother gave them one in 1971. Then, Queen Elizabeth II gave them another in 1974. This means the Royal Family used their products.
History of Whitworths
Changes in Ownership
In September 2013, a company called Equistone bought Whitworths. Later, in May 2017, Whitworths was sold again. This time, it was bought by Anatolia, a company from Turkey that also makes dried fruit.
Growing the Business
In 2016, Whitworths bought another company. It was called Carr's Flour Mills Ltd. This purchase cost £36 million. By buying Carr's, Whitworths became one of the biggest sellers of flour in the UK!
