A whoopie pie is a yummy American treat! It's like a sandwich made of two soft, round, cake-like cookies. In between these two pieces, there's a sweet, creamy filling.
People call whoopie pies by different names. Some call them a "black moon," a "gob," or a "black-and-white." You might even hear them called a "Big Fat Oreo" or "BFO."
Whoopie pies are often made with chocolate cake. But sometimes, they can be made with pumpkin or gingerbread cake too. The creamy filling is usually a sweet frosting or marshmallow cream.
Where Whoopie Pies Come From
Whoopie pies are a classic treat from New England. They are also a special tradition for the Amish people in Pennsylvania. Even though they started in these areas, you can now find whoopie pies all over the United States!
Maine's Official Treat
The whoopie pie is very popular in the state of Maine. In fact, it's the official state treat of Maine! This is different from Maine's official state dessert, which is blueberry pie.
Big Whoopie Pies
People love whoopie pies so much that they've made some really big ones!
On March 26, 2011, the world's largest whoopie pie was made in South Portland, Maine. It weighed an amazing 1,062 pounds (482 kg)! Pieces of this giant whoopie pie were sold. The money helped send Maine-made whoopie pies to soldiers serving far away. Before this, the biggest whoopie pie was from Pennsylvania and weighed 200 pounds (91 kg).
Whoopie Pie Festivals
The town of Dover-Foxcroft in Maine hosts the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival every year. This fun festival started in 2009. In 2014, more than 7,500 people came to enjoy the festival!
At the festival, bakers from all over Maine compete. They want to win awards for making the best whoopie pies in different groups. It's a big celebration of this delicious treat!
