Wiki Peak is a tall mountain located in the Nutzotin Mountains of Alaska. It is part of the huge Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. This mountain is very close to the border between Canada and the United States.
To get to Wiki Peak, people often fly into a place called Horsfeld. After that, they need to cross Beaver Creek. This creek can be tricky! Sometimes it's high and dangerous, but other times it's easy to cross. It all depends on the time of year and the weather.
Ancient Tools from Wiki Peak
Wiki Peak is famous for a special type of rock found there called obsidian. Obsidian is a natural glass formed from volcanoes. It's very sharp when it breaks, so ancient people used it to make tools.
How Obsidian Was Used
People used obsidian from Wiki Peak a very long time ago. We know this because archaeologists have found these tools at ancient sites. Some of these tools date back as far as 13,400 years ago! This time is often called "cal BP," which means "calibrated Before Present."
Finding Obsidian Tools
Obsidian from Wiki Peak has been found at several important archaeological sites. These include the Broken Mammoth site, the Walker Road, Alaska, site, and the Moose Creek, Alaska, site. All these places are in the same area and show that people were using Wiki Peak obsidian over 13,000 years ago.
Archaeologists have studied the Wiki Peak obsidian source carefully. They found more than 65 ancient sites in the area around the mountain. Finding so many sites is common near places where valuable materials like obsidian could be collected. This shows how important Wiki Peak was to the people living in Alaska and northwest Canada long ago.
