History of the Wilbur Theatre
How the Theater Was Built
The Wilbur Theatre was built by Clarence Blackall in 1913. It officially opened its doors to the public the next year, in 1914. This beautiful building was recognized as a special place in 1980. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Later, in 1987, the city of Boston named it a Boston Landmark.
Changes in Ownership
In 1998, a company called SFX Entertainment bought several theaters in Boston. This included the lease for the Wilbur Theatre. SFX Entertainment is now known as Live Nation. The lease for the Wilbur Theatre ended in 2006.
In 2007, the theater was put up for sale. A person named Bill Blumenreich took over the lease in 2008. He used to own another comedy club in Quincy Market. Since then, the Wilbur Theatre has continued to be a popular spot. It regularly hosts many funny comedians and talented musicians.
