Melicope ovalis, also known as the wild pelea or Hana melicope, is a special kind of tree. It belongs to the Rutaceae family, which includes citrus fruits. This tree is found only in one place: the island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands. When a plant or animal lives only in one specific area, it is called endemic.

Where Does the Wild Pelea Live?

This unique tree grows only in the Kīpahulu Valley. This valley is part of Haleakalā National Park on the island of Maui. Sadly, the wild pelea is in danger. Its home is being harmed by animals like feral pigs. These are pigs that used to be farm animals but now live wild.

Other plants that are not native to Hawaii have also been brought in. These are called introduced species. They can take over the space and resources that the native plants need. Because of these problems, the wild pelea is losing its natural home. This is called habitat loss. The United States government has listed it as an endangered species. This means it is at high risk of disappearing forever. Like other Melicope trees in Hawaii, this species is also known by its Hawaiian name, alani.

What Does the Wild Pelea Look Like?

The Melicope ovalis tree can grow quite tall. It reaches up to 5 meters (about 16 feet) in height. Its leaves are special too. They are oval-shaped and feel leathery to the touch. Each leaf can be up to 16 centimeters (about 6 inches) long. They can also be 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) wide. If you gently crush a leaf, it gives off a smell. This scent is similar to anise, which is a spice often used in licorice candy.
