Wilderness is a small, quiet place in the northeast part of Oregon County, in the state of Missouri, USA. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's usually managed by the county.

Where is Wilderness Located?

Wilderness is found at the very end of Missouri Route K, a local road. It's nestled right inside the beautiful Irish Wilderness area, which is part of the huge Mark Twain National Forest. Imagine a place surrounded by lots of trees and nature! The Eleven Point River flows about three miles to the southeast, and the town of Alton is about twelve miles southeast.

A Look Back: History of Wilderness

The name "Wilderness" comes from the area's original name, "Irish Wilderness." This place was once home to a group of Irish settlers who tried to create a new community here.

A post office was opened in Wilderness in 1882, which helped the community connect with the outside world. This post office served the area for many years, finally closing its doors in 1954. The original Irish settlement was eventually left behind because of the difficult times and challenges that came with the American Civil War.
