William Chambers (born 26 May 1988) is an Australian former professional rugby player. He played both rugby league and rugby union. He last played for the LA Giltinis in the United States.

Chambers won two championships with the Melbourne Storm in NRL. He retired from the NRL in 2021. He played as a centre or wing. He also represented Australia at an international level.

He played for Queensland in the State of Origin series. He also played for the Prime Minister's XIII and the Indigenous All Stars. In rugby union, Chambers played for the Queensland Reds, Munster, and Suntory Sungoliath.

Early Life and Beginnings

Will Chambers was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. His family is from an Indigenous Australian background. When he was two years old, his family moved to Nhulunbuy. This is a remote town in the Northern Territory.

He started playing junior rugby in Nhulunbuy. At 13, he moved back to Brisbane. He played school rugby for St Joseph's College, Nudgee. The Melbourne Storm signed him to play in the NRL when he was still a schoolboy.

Rugby League Career

Starting with Melbourne Storm (2007-2009)

Will Chambers began his senior career with the Melbourne Storm in the NRL. He usually played as a centre or wing. He also played for Brisbane Norths in the Queensland Cup. When player Matt King left the Storm, he suggested Chambers could take his place.

Chambers' last game for Melbourne in this period was the 2009 NRL Grand Final. The Storm won against the Parramatta Eels. However, this championship title was later not counted due to rules issues with the Melbourne Storm team.

Return to Melbourne Storm (2012-2019)

Chambers rejoined the Melbourne Storm in 2012. His first game back was on 25 March 2012 against the Sydney Roosters. He scored a try in that game. He had a great return, scoring three tries in one game against the New Zealand Warriors. This is called a "hat-trick" in rugby.

By winning the 2012 NRL Grand Final, Chambers joined a special group of players. These players had won both NRL and Super Rugby titles. Chambers won his titles in back-to-back years. He won with the Queensland Reds in 2011 (rugby union).

In 2013, he helped Melbourne win the 2013 World Club Challenge. They beat Leeds in this international match.

Chambers was chosen for the Queensland team in the 2014 State of Origin series. He was the 18th man for the first two games. The 18th man is a reserve player who can come on if another player gets injured. When Brent Tate was injured in game two, Chambers made his debut in Game Three.

In the 2015 pre-season, Chambers was the captain for the Melbourne Storm at the NRL Auckland Nines. He was also picked for the Indigenous All Stars team.

After a strong start to the 2015 NRL season, Chambers became the 800th player for the Australian Kangaroos. He played his first international game as a centre against the New Zealand Kiwis. This was in the 2015 Anzac Test.

In the 2016 NRL season, Melbourne won the Minor Premiership. This means they finished first in the regular season. They reached the grand final but lost to Cronulla-Sutherland 14–12. Chambers scored a try in that game.

The 2017 NRL season saw Melbourne win the Minor Premiership again. They reached the grand final and won 34–6 against North Queensland.

In the 2018 NRL season, Melbourne finished second. They played in the 2018 NRL Grand Final against the Sydney Roosters. Melbourne lost 21–6. Chambers had a rivalry with Roosters player Latrell Mitchell. This rivalry had started earlier in the year during the 2018 State of Origin series.

In the 2019 NRL season, Melbourne won the Minor Premiership again. However, they were defeated by the Sydney Roosters in the finals. This was Chambers' last game for Melbourne.

Playing for Cronulla-Sutherland (2021)

On 19 April 2021, Chambers signed a one-year deal with Cronulla-Sutherland in the NRL.

He played his first game for Cronulla-Sutherland in round 8 of the 2021 NRL season. It was against his old team, Melbourne, who won 40-14.

In round 15, Chambers scored his first try for Cronulla against North Queensland. Cronulla-Sutherland won that game 26-24.

On 10 August, Chambers was removed from the Cronulla team. This was reportedly due to his on-field comments during games.

Rugby Union Career

Queensland Reds (2010-2011)

Chambers switched to rugby union in 2010. He signed a two-year deal with the Queensland Reds to play in the Super 14 competition. He was a reserve player for the Reds when they won the Super 15 final in 2011.

Munster (2011-2012)

Chambers then signed a short-term deal with Munster in Ireland in September 2011. He played his first full game for Munster in October 2011. He also played in the Heineken Cup, a major European competition. Chambers scored his first try for Munster in November 2011. He left Munster in January 2012 to return to Australia and rejoin the Melbourne Storm. He played 8 games for Munster's senior team and scored 1 try.

Suntory Sungoliath (2020)

After leaving the Melbourne Storm in 2019, Chambers joined Suntory Sungoliath. This is a rugby union team in Japan.

LA Giltinis (2022)

Chambers returned to rugby union for a third time in 2022. He signed with the LA Giltinis, a team in Major League Rugby in the United States.
