Will Hoebee (born June 29, 1947 – died June 10, 2012) was a talented Dutch record producer and songwriter. He helped many musicians create their songs and albums. In 1981, he married José Hoebee, a singer from the famous girl group Luv'. Will worked with many well-known artists, including Benny Neyman, Saskia & Serge, Gheorghe Zamfir, David Soul, and Nana Mouskouri.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Will Hoebee was born in Hilversum, a town in the Netherlands. After finishing high school, he started working at the mailing service for AVRO. This was a Dutch public broadcasting company. There, he met many famous people. Later, he worked at the NRU (now called NOS) record library.
In 1970, Will joined the radio promotion team at Ariola Records. Two years later, he moved to Phonogram Records. He stayed there until the early 1980s, learning a lot about the music business.
Becoming a Successful Music Producer
In the mid-1970s, Will Hoebee began working with another producer and songwriter, Peter Koelewijn. Together, they wrote "Patrick Mon Chéri." This song became a Top 5 hit in the Netherlands for Kiki & Pearly in 1975. A French singer named Sheila also sang this song. Her version was a huge success in France, selling 800,000 copies!
Soon after, Will produced the Dutch version of "Rocky" for Don Mercedes. This song, originally by Austin Roberts, became a number one hit in the Netherlands. In 1977, Will and Peter Koelewijn started their own record label called "Born Free." It was part of Phonogram Records. Artists like Saskia & Serge and Rob de Nijs released music through this label.
In 1979, Will met Luv' singer José Andreoli. They got married in late 1981. Their wedding party was held at David Soul's villa in Los Angeles. Their son, Tim, was born on October 14, 1985. Will helped José with some of her recordings. This included her Top 20 hit "So Long, Marianne" (a duet with TV host Ron Brandsteder in 1984). He also worked on her album "Herinnering" with Bonnie Saint Claire. This album featured Dutch versions of ABBA songs in 1985. Will also helped produce the Dutch version of the children's musical Abbacadabra.
Will produced music for many famous Dutch artists. These included André van Duin, Bonnie St. Claire, and Benny Neyman. With Benny Neyman, he produced the number one hit "Waarom fluister ik je naam nog" in the Netherlands. He also worked with international stars like Gheorghe Zamfir, Vicky Leandros, Nana Mouskouri, and David Soul. During the 1980s, Will was an A&R manager. This means he helped find and develop new artists for labels like CNR and later Koch records.
Later Years and Legacy
Will Hoebee slowed down his work in the music business in the 1990s. In 2004, he joined a music website called "muziekmaken.nl." His wife, José, wrote a weekly column for the site. He also produced a TV talent show called Tijd Voor Talent. José hosted this show on a local Dutch TV channel.
In 2009, Will worked with Piet Souer to record a new version of the classic hit "Be My Baby." This song was performed by former BZN member Anny Schilder and José Hoebee.
Will Hoebee passed away in a hospital in Hasselt, Belgium, on June 10, 2012. He died from cancer. He left behind a legacy of many successful songs and albums he helped create.
