William Augustus Hall (born October 15, 1815 – died December 15, 1888) was an American politician. He served as a representative for the state of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives. His brother, Willard Preble Hall, was also a politician and served as the Governor of Missouri. William Augustus Hall's son, Uriel Sebree Hall, also became a representative.

Early Life and Education

William Augustus Hall was born in Portland, Maine, on October 15, 1815. When he was young, his family moved to Harpers Ferry, Virginia. There, he went to the local schools.

Later, he attended Yale College. In 1840, he moved to the state of Missouri. The next year, in 1841, he passed his exams to become a lawyer. This meant he could practice law in Missouri.

A Career in Politics

William Augustus Hall had an interesting career in public service. He was a captain in the American-Mexican War. This war took place from 1846 to 1848.

From 1847 to 1861, he worked as a judge for the Circuit Court in Missouri. This court handles many different types of legal cases. In 1861, he was chosen to be a delegate for the Missouri Constitutional Convention. A convention like this is a meeting where people discuss and create or change a state's constitution.

Serving in Congress

In 1861, William Augustus Hall was elected to the 37th Congress. He took the place of another representative, John Bullock Clark. Clark had been removed from Congress because he fought against the United States during the Civil War.

Hall was then elected on his own in 1862. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 20, 1862, until March 4, 1865. He decided not to run for another term in 1864.

While in Congress, Hall was known for his strong belief in keeping the United States together. This was very important during the time of the American Civil War. In 1864, he also served as a delegate for the Democratic National Convention. This is a big meeting where the Democratic Party chooses its candidate for president.

Later Years

After his time in Congress ended, William Augustus Hall went back to being a lawyer. He continued to practice law.

He passed away near Darksville, Missouri, on December 15, 1888. He was buried in a family burial plot.
