William Barksdale Tabb was an American lawyer and a military officer. He lived from 1840 to 1874. He served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Early Life and Military Service
William Tabb went to two important schools: the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and the University of Virginia. After finishing school, he became a lawyer.
When the American Civil War began, Tabb joined the army. He first worked as a captain for General Henry A. Wise. Later, in 1862, he became a colonel. He led a group of soldiers called the 59th Virginia Infantry. Colonel Tabb and his regiment were part of important battles, like the Battle of Sayler's Creek. This battle was a very difficult one for the Confederate side.
Family Life
William Barksdale Tabb was the second of four children. His parents were Thomas Yelverton Tabb and Marianna Elizabeth Bertrand Archer. One of his brothers was John B. Tabb, who became a well-known poet and a priest.
William Tabb got married for the first time in 1864. He had three children with his first wife: Harriet Rutherford Tabb, William Barksdale Tabb Jr., and Sherrard Rutherford Tabb. After his first wife passed away in 1868, Tabb married again in 1872. With his second wife, he had a daughter named Jennie Masters Tabb.
