William Bayly (also known as Bayley or Bayliffe) was an important English lawyer and manager who lived from about 1540 to 1612. He was also a Justice of the Peace, which meant he helped keep law and order. For a short time in 1572, he was a Member of Parliament for the town of Chippenham. This meant he helped make laws in the English Parliament.

Early Life and Family Connections

William Bayly was born in Chippenham around the year 1540. His father, John Bayly, was also a lawyer. His mother was named Joan or Jone. Both of his parents were from Castle Cary in Somerset.

The Bayly Family Background

The Bayly family was quite well-known and respected. They had their own family crest, which showed they were from a good family. They often worked with the powerful Seymour family, usually by helping them with legal matters.

Becoming a Lawyer

When William was 19, in November 1559, he started studying to become a lawyer at a famous place called the Middle Temple. After finishing his studies, he became a qualified lawyer. This is called being "called to the Bar."

Life in Chippenham

In 1567, William Bayly was given the right to use Monkton House in Chippenham. He also got to use half of its land, which was about 400 acres. This was given to him by Gabriel Pleydell, a well-known politician.

William Bayly later married Gabriel Pleydell's only daughter, Agnes. They were married at St Andrew's Church, Chippenham. The part of the church where they got married was even named "Bayliffe's Aisle" in their honor.
