William Francis Burman (born August 30, 1897 – died October 23, 1974) was a brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for courage in the face of the enemy. This special medal is given to soldiers from Britain and Commonwealth countries.

A Hero in World War I

William Burman was a sergeant in the British Army during World War I. He was 20 years old when he showed incredible bravery. This happened during a big battle called the Battle of the Menin Road Ridge.

Stopping a Machine Gun

On September 20, 1917, Sergeant Burman's company was trying to advance. Their path was blocked by a dangerous machine gun firing from very close range. This gun was stopping everyone. Sergeant Burman quickly told his fellow soldiers to wait a moment.

He then bravely ran forward by himself, even though it was very dangerous. He reached the enemy machine gun and managed to kill the enemy gunner. Then, he picked up the machine gun and carried it to his company's goal. He even used the captured gun to help his own side!

Capturing Enemy Soldiers

About 15 minutes later, Sergeant Burman saw more enemy soldiers. There were about 40 of them, and they were attacking the battalion on his right side. He knew he had to act fast.

Sergeant Burman and two other soldiers quickly ran around behind the enemy group. They managed to kill six of the enemy soldiers. They also captured two enemy officers and 29 other soldiers. His quick thinking and bravery saved many lives that day.

His Special Medal

William Burman's Victoria Cross medal is a very important piece of history. You can see it on display at the Imperial War Museum in London, England. It reminds everyone of his amazing courage during the war.
