The William Burnett House was a special old farmhouse in Fayette County, Ohio, United States. It was built a long time ago, in the 1800s. This house was famous for its amazing mix of building styles. Because it was so unique, it was named a historic site.

Who Was William Burnett?

William Burnett was an important person in Union Township during the mid-1800s. In 1850, he worked as a constable for the township. A constable is like a local police officer. He was also a marshal for the village of Washington Court House. A marshal helps keep order in a town.

Six years later, William Burnett became the county sheriff for Fayette County. He served in this important role for five years. Besides his work in law enforcement, Burnett also ran a farm. He built his new house on this farm in 1869. The farm was located southwest of Washington Courthouse.

What Did the House Look Like?

The Burnett House was built with strong brick walls and a brick foundation. It had a metal roof and some parts made of wood. The house was five bays wide. A bay is a section of a building, often marked by windows.

The house had a very interesting mix of building styles. Its basic floor plan was an I-house. An I-house is a simple, two-story house, often shaped like the letter "I." But unlike most I-houses, Burnett's home had fancy features. These features came from the Greek Revival and Italianate styles.

For example, the house had pairs of brackets above the windows. These brackets helped support the large cornice, which is a decorative molding at the top of a wall. These were Italianate features. The house also had Greek-style parts. Around the main entrance, there was glass with a lintel (a beam above a doorway), sidelights (windows on the sides), and a transom light (a window above the door).

These Greek and Italianate details made the Burnett house stand out. Most I-houses were simple and vernacular. This means they were built using local styles and materials, without fancy designs.

Protecting History

In early 1989, the William Burnett House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects important in American history. The house qualified because of its special and important architecture.

Even though it was listed as a historic place, the house was sadly torn down by 2006. However, it is still officially listed on the National Register. This means its history and importance are still recognized.
