William C. Rhoden is an American sports journalist and author. He used to write for The New York Times. Later, he joined ESPN's website, The Undefeated, where he still writes today. He also teaches at Arizona State University and leads a special program called Rhoden Fellows.

William C. Rhoden was born in 1950 in Chicago, Illinois. He went to Morgan State University from 1968 to 1973. While there, he played football for the Morgan State Bears football team. In 1968, his team won a big game against the Grambling Tigers. This game was played at Yankee Stadium and was known as the "Whitney Young Classic."

Journalism Career

After finishing college, Rhoden started his career in journalism. He worked for several newspapers and magazines. These included the Afro-American Times and the Baltimore Sun. From 1974 to 1978, he became a columnist for Ebony magazine.

In 1983, Rhoden joined The New York Times. He became a sports columnist there. He wrote about sports for this famous newspaper for many years.

His Book: Forty Million Dollar Slaves

In 2006, William C. Rhoden published his first book. It is called Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete. This book looks closely at the history of professional sports in the United States. It talks about how race has played a role in sports.

Etan Thomas, a retired professional basketball player and activist, really liked the book. He said it is a "necessary read for all young athletes." The book helps readers understand important issues in sports.
