Early Life and Family History

William Caulfeild was born in Donamon Castle in County Roscommon. He was the third son of William, the 2nd Baron Caulfeild. His mother was Mary King.

William had two older brothers, Toby and Robert. Both of them died without having any sons. Because of this, William became the Baron in 1644 after his brother Robert passed away.

William's Public Service

William Caulfeild first supported the Parliamentary side during the time of Oliver Cromwell. In 1653, he captured Sir Phelim O'Neil. Sir Phelim O'Neil was involved in a rebellion and the death of William's brother.

Later, in 1660, William changed his support to King Charles II of England. He became a captain in the army for the King. After King Charles II returned to power, William joined the Irish House of Lords. He also became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland.

Key Roles and Titles

In 1661, William was given two important jobs. He became the Custos Rotulorum (which means "keeper of the rolls" or chief record keeper) for County Armagh. He also became the Custos Rotulorum for County Tyrone. He held both these jobs until he died in 1671.

William was also given control of Charlemont Fort for his whole life. However, he sold this control back to the King three years later. On October 8, 1665, he received a new, higher title. He was made Viscount Charlemont in the County of Armagh.

His Family Life

In 1653, William Caulfeild married Hon. Sarah Moore. She was the daughter of the 2nd Viscount Moore of Drogheda. William and Sarah had four sons and three daughters together.

Viscount Charlemont passed away in April 1671. He was buried at St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh. His wife, Sarah, lived much longer and passed away in 1712.

William was followed in his titles by his second son, William. One of his younger sons, Toby, had many notable family members later on. These included his grandson John, who was a church leader, and John's son, General James Caulfeild. William's daughter Mary married William, the 6th Baron Blayney. His youngest son John was also a member of the Parliament of Ireland.
