The William Clark Company Thread Mill is an old factory building in Stonington, Connecticut. It's located in the village of Pawcatuck, right by the Pawcatuck River. This mill started being built in 1892. It's a great example of what factories looked like in the late 1800s. This mill was very important for the local economy, meaning it helped a lot of people find jobs and made money for the area. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
The William Clark Thread Mill
The William Clark Company Thread Mill is south of the main part of Pawcatuck village. It sits right next to the Pawcatuck River. The mill is made up of several brick buildings. The biggest building is four stories tall. It measures about 270 feet long and 100 feet wide.
The windows on the mill have a special shape, like a rounded arch at the top. There's also a decorative brick design at the very top of the walls. A tall, square tower sticks out from one corner of the building. This tower used to be five stories high, but now it's a bit taller than the rest of the main building. It has big windows that are also shaped with round arches.
History of the Mill
The William Clark Company was started in 1892 by a man named William Clark. He was a very important maker of cotton thread. His main factories were in Trenton, New Jersey. This new factory in Pawcatuck was probably built to make more thread. It also helped the company grow after some problems at their Trenton factory.
The mill used steam power to run its machines. It was a major employer in the Pawcatuck and Westerly, Rhode Island area. Many people worked there. The factory kept running into the 1950s, even though its owners changed over time.
In 1938, a very strong storm called the New England Hurricane of 1938 hit the area. The mill was badly damaged by the storm. However, important parts of the building were fixed or rebuilt after the hurricane.
