William Wallace Davenport Turner (born June 1, 1836 – died April 2, 1905) was an important person in American history. He was a brave soldier, a lawyer, and a politician. He even served in the government of Wisconsin.

A Life of Adventure

William Turner was born on June 1, 1836, in Quincy, Illinois. When he grew up, he joined the army. He fought in the American Civil War, a big war in the United States. He was part of the Union Army, which was one side in the war. William became a colonel, a high rank in the army. He even took part in a major battle called the Siege of Vicksburg.

After the war ended, William moved around quite a bit. He lived in Mobile, Alabama, for a while. Then, in 1877, he moved to Ripon, Wisconsin. Later, he lived in Spokane, Washington, and Bozeman, Montana. In Montana, he was the president of a railway company called the Yellowstone Park railway. He passed away in Los Angeles on April 2, 1905.

Serving the Public

William Turner was also very active in politics. In 1883, he became a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is a group of people who make laws for the state of Wisconsin. Before that, he worked as the City Attorney for Ripon for two terms. A City Attorney is like a lawyer who works for the city government.

He was also the City Attorney for Mobile, Alabama. In 1876, he tried to become a member of the United States House of Representatives. This is part of the national government that makes laws for the whole country. He ran for the seat from Alabama's 1st congressional district but did not win. William Turner was a member of the Republican Party.
