The William Dorsheimer House is a special old home located in Buffalo, New York. It's a very important building because of its history and unique design. This house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, which means it's recognized as a place worth protecting for future generations.

Building History

This amazing house was built in 1868. It was designed by a famous architect named Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886). He built it for William Dorsheimer (1832–1888), who was a well-known lawyer and even the Lieutenant Governor of New York. The house shows how French art and design ideas influenced buildings in America after the American Civil War.

House Design and Style

The William Dorsheimer House is a three-story building with a fairly simple shape. However, it has cool details like carved decorations that look like flowers (called rosettes) and special grooves (called triglyphs).

The outside walls are made of yellow-brown (ochre) bricks. They have horizontal stripes of gray sandstone running across them. The corners of the building also have vertical stone pieces. The windows are framed by these same gray sandstone strips and are lined up neatly. The roof is a special type called a mansard roof, which means it has slopes on all four sides. It's made of slate (a type of rock) and has large windows sticking out of it, called dormers.

Henry Hobson Richardson's Work

The Dorsheimer House was the very first building that Henry Hobson Richardson designed in Buffalo. This project was a big deal for his career. It helped him get other important jobs, leading to some of his most famous buildings.

For example, in 1877, when William Dorsheimer was the Lieutenant Governor, Richardson was chosen to help finish the New York State Capitol building. He also worked on the Albany City Hall. In Buffalo, Richardson also designed the Buffalo State Hospital in 1870. He also designed the William Gratwick House, which was torn down in 1919.

The House Today

Today, the inside of the Dorsheimer House has been changed quite a bit. It's now used for businesses. One main stairway, which goes from the first floor to the third floor, is still there. It looks like this staircase was moved to one side to create more open space in the rooms.
