About Sir William Douglas

William Douglas was the second son of a very important man, Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus. His mother was Elizabeth, whose father was Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd. William became known as Douglas of Glenbervie because he gained the lands of Glenbervie when he got married.

He owned land in different parts of Scotland. In 1493 and again in 1509, he received official papers for the lands of Grenane in Ayrshire. Later, in 1510, his ownership of the lands of Braidwood in Lanarkshire was also confirmed.

William Douglas was made a knight before the year 1511. He was killed on 9 September 1513, during the famous Battle of Flodden.

His Family Life

In 1492, William Douglas was promised in marriage to Elizabeth. She was the daughter and co-owner of the lands of James Auchinleck. Through this marriage agreement, William also gained control over Auchinleck's estates.

William and Elizabeth had a son named Sir Archibald Douglas of Glenbervie.

Elizabeth Douglas lived longer than her husband. After his death, she joined a convent called St. Catherine of Siena. This convent was located on the Burgh Muir near Edinburgh. The area around the convent is now known as Sciennes, named after the convent itself.
