William Elphinstone, 15th Lord Elphinstone facts for kids
William Buller Fullerton Elphinstone (born 18 November 1828 – died 18 January 1893) was a Scottish politician. He was known as William Elphinstone until 1861. He held the title of the 15th Lord Elphinstone and was also the 1st Baron Elphinstone. He was a member of the Conservative Party.

William Elphinstone was born on November 18, 1828. His father was Lieutenant-Colonel James Drummond Fullerton Elphinstone. His mother was Anna Maria Buller Elphinstone. William came from an important family with a long history.
His grandfather was the Hon. William Fullerton Elphinstone. His mother's father was Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Buller, 1st Baronet.
His Career and Travels
William Elphinstone started his career in the navy. From 1845 to 1847, he worked as a midshipman on the ship HMS Grampus. A midshipman is a young officer in training.
In 1861, he inherited the title of Lord Elphinstone from a distant cousin. In 1867, he was chosen to be a Scottish Representative Peer. This meant he represented Scotland in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament.
Lord Elphinstone served as a Lord-in-waiting. This job meant he helped the government in the House of Lords. He worked for Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli from 1874 to 1880. He also worked for Lord Salisbury from 1885 to 1886 and again from 1886 to 1889. In 1885, he was given another special title: Baron Elphinstone. This new title was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
In 1885, Lord Elphinstone traveled to Victoria in Australia. He spent three weeks there with the English historian James Anthony Froude and Froude's son. After Australia, they went to New Zealand in March 1885. They visited the famous Pink & White Terraces near Mount Tarawera. They also stayed with Sir George Grey on Kawarau Island. During his travels, Lord Elphinstone made many sketches. James Anthony Froude used these sketches in his book, Oceana, or, England and Her Colonies, which was published in 1886.
His Family Life
Lord Elphinstone married Lady Constance Euphemia Murray in 1864. She was the daughter of Alexander Murray, 6th Earl of Dunmore.
Lord Elphinstone and Lady Constance had five children:
- James Drummond Elphinstone (1865–1890). He never married.
- The Hon. Lilian Elphinstone (1867–1956). She never married.
- Sidney Elphinstone, 16th Lord Elphinstone (1869–1955). He married Lady Mary Bowes-Lyon. Lady Mary was the sister of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
- Hon. Mountstuart William Elphinstone (1871–1957). He worked for the War Office during World War I. He never married.
- Hon. Constance Lothian Elphinstone (1873–1895). She never married.
Lord Elphinstone passed away in January 1893 when he was 64 years old. His oldest living son, Sidney, inherited his titles. Lady Elphinstone died later in March 1922. She lived in Pinewood, Windlesham, Surrey.
