William F. Russell was an important person in early Florida history. He was born around 1805 in North Carolina. Russell was a settler, a soldier, and a leader in the Florida government. He even served as the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives in 1854.
Early Life and Challenges
William Russell became a major in the military. He was put in charge of the Indian River Settlement in what was then St. Lucia County. In July 1849, this settlement faced a difficult time. It broke up after an attack by Seminole Indians. During this event, Russell was shot in the arm. Sadly, his brother-in-law, John Barker, was killed. However, the rest of Russell's family managed to escape safely to New Smyrna.
A Leader in Florida
Russell played a big role in local government. He served as a county commissioner for St. Lucie County. He held this position from 1847 to 1852, and again in 1853. His time as commissioner ended when Brevard County was created from parts of St. Lucie County in 1855.
In 1854, Russell was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for Florida. During his time there, he was chosen to be the Speaker of the House. The Speaker is like the leader of the House of Representatives.
Russell was also important in creating new areas of Florida. In 1855, he introduced a law to create Brevard County. He named this new county after his friend, Theodorus W. Brevard.
The Russell-Padrick House
Around 1875, William Russell built a two-story house in St. Lucie County. This house is very old and special. It is the oldest standing house in the county today. It is now known as the Russell-Padrick House. You can find it at 2817 North Indian River Drive. This historic house is part of the St. Lucie Village Historic District.
