William Hall Gage was born on January 6, 1718. His parents were Thomas Gage and Benedicta Maria Theresa Hall. He went to school at Westminster School.

Starting in 1744, William Gage was elected five times as a Member of Parliament. This meant he represented the town of Seaford in Sussex in the British government.

In 1754, when his father passed away, William became the next Viscount Gage. This was a special noble title he inherited.

Roles in Government

From 1755 to 1763, and again from 1765 to 1782, William Gage held a job called Paymaster of Pensions. This role involved managing payments to people who received money from the government. The office was later closed down by Parliament.

On February 3, 1757, he married Elizabeth Gideon. Her father was Sir Sampson Gideon. They lived at a place called Firle Place in Firle, Sussex.

In 1780, William Gage was given another noble title, Baron Gage. This title was meant to pass down to his sons. However, he did not have any sons. So, in 1790, he was given the title Baron Gage of Highmeadow. This new title could pass to his brothers' sons. William Gage passed away on October 11, 1791.

Family Connections

William Gage had a younger brother named Thomas Gage. Thomas became a very important military leader. He was the Commander-in-Chief of British forces at the start of the American Revolution.

Thomas's son, Sir William Hall Gage, also became famous. He served as an Admiral of the Fleet in the navy in 1862.

Since William Gage did not have any children, his nephew, Henry Gage, 3rd Viscount Gage, inherited his title when William died in 1791. Henry was the eldest son of William's brother, Thomas.
