Awards Victoria Cross

William Griffiths VC (1841 – 22 January 1879) was an Irish soldier. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest and most important award for bravery in the British military. This medal is given for incredible courage when facing danger.

A Special Act of Bravery

William Griffiths was about 26 years old when he showed amazing bravery. He was a Private in the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot. This unit later became known as The South Wales Borderers.

His Victoria Cross was not given for bravery in a battle against an enemy. Instead, he earned it for saving lives at sea during a big storm. This happened off the coast of the Andaman Islands.

The Rescue Mission

On May 7, 1867, a dangerous event took place near Little Andaman island in eastern India. A ship called the Assam Valley had sent some crew members to the island. They went to find out what happened to their commander and seven other crew members. These people had landed on the island earlier and were feared to be in danger from the local islanders.

Private Griffiths was part of a small group of five soldiers. The others were David Bell, James Cooper, Campbell Mellis Douglas, and Thomas Murphy. They bravely got into a boat.

They went through very dangerous waves and strong surf to reach the island. Their mission was to rescue their comrades who were in trouble. This act of courage saved lives and showed incredible selflessness.

Killed in Action

William Griffiths was later killed in action. This happened during the Anglo-Zulu War on January 22, 1879. He died in the Battle of Isandlwana in Zululand.

Where to See the Medal

William Griffiths's Victoria Cross medal is on display today. You can see it at the Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh. This museum is located in Brecon, Powys, Wales.
