William Grindecobbe and the Peasants' Revolt

Early Life and Background

William Grindecobbe's name suggests he might have been a miller, someone who grinds grain into flour. Many millers joined the revolt. People said he was good at speaking and could read and write well.

Some historians think he might have been a former priest. This could mean he was unhappy with the taxes the church collected, which might have made him want to rebel.

Leading the Revolt

William Grindecobbe was one of the main leaders of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381. He worked alongside other famous leaders like Wat Tyler and John Wrawe. On June 15, he led the people of St Albans in their part of the uprising.

His Role in St Albans

During the revolt, William Grindecobbe became well known for standing up to the powerful Abbot of St. Albans, Thomas de la Mare. Grindecobbe led a group of rebels to meet King Richard II. They met the King at Mile End and managed to get a letter from him. This letter ordered the Abbot to hand over important royal documents, called charters, to the rebels.

The rebels then destroyed these charters. They even damaged part of the abbey building itself. This showed how determined they were to challenge the authority of the Abbot.

The End of the Revolt

After the revolt, William Grindecobbe was captured and executed in 1381. He was executed along with other leaders of the uprising, including John Wrawe and John Ball. His execution was overseen by Henry le Despenser.
