William Knox-Leet was a brave soldier from Ireland. He became a Major-General in the British Army. He is famous for receiving the Victoria Cross. This is the highest award for bravery in the British military. It is given for amazing courage when facing the enemy.

A Hero's Medal: The Victoria Cross
William Knox-Leet earned the Victoria Cross during the Anglo-Zulu War. This war happened in South Africa. He was 45 years old at the time. He was a Major in the 13th Regiment of Foot.
A Daring Rescue
On March 28, 1879, a battle took place at Battle of Hlobane. During a difficult retreat, Lieutenant A. M. Smith was in danger. His horse had been shot. Zulu warriors were chasing him closely. He would have been captured or killed.
Major Leet saw what was happening. He quickly rode over to Lieutenant Smith. He helped the lieutenant get onto his own horse. Then, Major Leet rode with him to safety. They were under enemy fire the whole time. This incredibly brave act saved Lieutenant Smith's life. For this courage, Major Leet was given the Victoria Cross.
Later Life and Military Career
After the Anglo-Zulu War, William Knox-Leet continued his military service. He was involved in other conflicts.
The Third Anglo-Burmese War
Later, as a Colonel, he commanded soldiers in the Third Anglo-Burmese War. This war took place between 1885 and 1887. During this time, 144 men from his battalion lost their lives. Their names are remembered on a special memorial.
William Knox-Leet was eventually promoted. He became a Major General. This is a very high rank in the army.
Family and Retirement
William Knox-Leet married Charlotte Elizabeth Anne Sherlock. They had two sons together. Their names were Bertie Fielding Knox Leet and Dudley Knox Leet.
William retired from the army in July 1887. He passed away in Great Chart, Kent, on June 29, 1898. A memorial in Great Chart Churchyard honors him.

Today, you can see William Knox-Leet's Victoria Cross. It is on display at the Somerset Light Infantry Museum. This museum is located in Taunton, Somerset, England.
