William Mallory: A Life in Politics

Becoming a Member of Parliament

William Mallory was first chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Ripon in 1614. Being an MP meant he helped make decisions for the country.

He was re-elected several times for Ripon. This happened in 1621, 1624, and 1625. He was chosen again in 1628.

Time Without Parliament

After 1629, King Charles I decided to rule England without the help of Parliament for eleven years. This meant William Mallory and other MPs could not do their job during that time.

Return to Parliament

In April 1640, Parliament was called back for a short time. This was known as the Short Parliament. William Mallory was re-elected as an MP for Ripon.

Later that same year, in November 1640, he was elected again for the Long Parliament. This Parliament lasted for many years.

Supporting the King

As the English Civil War began, William Mallory openly supported King Charles I. Because of this, he was removed from Parliament on September 16, 1642. This meant he could no longer be an MP.

William Mallory passed away in 1646.

His Family

William Mallory married a woman named Dorothy Bellingham. Her father was Sir James Bellingham from Levens. William and Dorothy had a son named John Mallory (1610–1655). Just like his father and grandfather, John also became an MP for Ripon.
