William Marlott (born May 1574 – died February 1646) was an English politician. He lived in a town called Shoreham. William Marlott was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, between 1625 and 1646. He supported the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War.

Who Was William Marlott?

William Marlott was born in Sussex, a county in England. His parents were Thomas Marlott and Dorothy Stapley. He grew up and later became an important person in politics.

William Marlott's Time in Parliament

In 1624, William Marlott was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called New Shoreham. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the government. He held this job until 1629.

At that time, King Charles I decided to rule England without Parliament for eleven years. This meant there were no elections or meetings of Parliament during that period.

Returning to Parliament

When Parliament was called again, William Marlott was re-elected as an MP for New Shoreham. This happened in April 1640 for what was known as the Short Parliament. He was elected again in November 1640 for the Long Parliament. He continued to be an MP until he passed away in 1646.

During his time in the Long Parliament, on February 5, 1644, William Marlott was away from a meeting. He was busy working for Parliament. On March 27, 1644, he took something called the Covenant. This was an important promise made by supporters of Parliament during the English Civil War.

When Did William Marlott Die?

William Marlott died in 1646. He was buried on February 8, 1646, in Shoreham-by-Sea, the town where he lived.
