William Morgan's Life
Early Years and Education
William Morgan was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Morgan. His mother was Elizabeth Wyndham. William went to Queen's College, Oxford in 1656 to study. Later, in 1658, he studied law at Gray's Inn in London.
Becoming a Politician
In 1659, William was first chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire. This was during a time called the Third Protectorate Parliament. He continued to represent Monmouthshire in the House of Commons until he died in 1680. This meant he had a role in making decisions for the country for many years.
Family and Tredegar House
In 1661, William Morgan married his first cousin, Blanche Morgan. She was the daughter of his father's sister. Blanche inherited a lot of land and money from her own family. This large amount of money, called a dowry, helped William rebuild Tredegar House. He made it a very grand and impressive home.
Blanche's family lands gave William and his future children a lot of political power in the area for many generations. William and Blanche had two sons, Thomas and John, and a daughter named Blanche.
After Blanche died in 1673, William married Elizabeth Dayrell. She was the widow of Sir Francis Dayrell. Sadly, Elizabeth had health issues that affected her mind.
William planned for his oldest son, Thomas, to marry Martha Mansel. He also planned for his daughter, Blanche, to marry Edward Mansel, Martha's brother. However, William died in London in 1680 before these marriages could happen. His daughter Blanche also died before marrying Edward. But Thomas, who inherited William's estates, did marry Martha Mansel.
