William Murray was the son of William Murray and Katherine Gray. His mother was the daughter of Andrew, Lord Gray. In August 1473, King James III chose William Murray to be the Steward and Forester of Strathearn. This meant he was in charge of managing royal lands and forests in that area. This important role was given to him again in 1583, or perhaps to his son who had the same name.

His family owned lands in places like Tullibardine and Gask. Early in the 1500s, William, his father, and his younger brother Andrew Murray, worked together to rebuild the Tullibardine Chapel.

Royal Tournaments and Court Life

William Murray was also involved in the exciting events at the royal court. In 1507 and 1508, King James IV of Scotland held special events called tournaments. These were like big games or competitions. Some of these tournaments had a theme from the stories of King Arthur, like the "Wild Knight and the Black Lady" events.

For these tournaments, the "Wild Knight" was joined by people dressed as wild men. William Murray helped by sending deer antlers (hart horns) and goat skins from Tullibardine to Edinburgh. These were used to make costumes for the wild men. By this time, William Murray's father was quite old and did not have to do royal service anymore.

In May 1508, during the Black Lady tournament, William Murray took part in a shooting contest. He competed against King James IV himself and another nobleman named Duncan Campbell.

William Murray is believed to have died in 1513 during a famous battle called the Battle of Flodden.
