William Noah is an important artist and former politician from Nunavut, Canada. He was born in 1944 near Back River, which is now part of Nunavut. He is known for his art, especially drawings, and for serving his community in government.
Serving His Community
William Noah was born in 1944 near Back River. This area is now part of Nunavut. He became a politician in the Northwest Territories. From 1979 to 1982, he was a member of the Northwest Territories Legislature. This is like being a representative for his region.
He was first chosen to be a politician in the 1979 Northwest Territories general election. He won the election for the Keewatin North area. He left his job in 1982 before his term was finished.
Today, William Noah lives in Baker Lake, Nunavut. He used to help the local politician for the Baker Lake area, David Simailak. He now works as a Community Liaison Officer for the Kiggavik Project. This project is run by AREVA Resources Canada.
His Art and Family
William Noah is also a talented artist. In 1998, he helped create a big art show called Qamanittuaq (Where the River Widens): Drawings by Baker Lake Artists. This show featured many drawings.
The exhibition included art by William Noah himself. It also showed drawings by his three sisters: Janet Kigusiuq, Victoria Mamnguqsualuk, and Nancy Pukingrnak. Their mother, Jessie Oonark, who was also a famous artist, had her work in the show too.
William Noah also helped start a group of artists called the Art and Cold Cash Collective. This group had five artists, including William Noah. The other members were Sheila Butler, Ruby Arngna'naaq, Patrick Mahon, and Jack Butler.
