Janet Kigusiuq (born 1926, died 2005) was a famous Inuit artist from Canada. She was born near Garry Lake in Nunavut. Later, she lived in Baker Lake, Nunavut.

Janet came from a very artistic family. Her mother, Jessie Oonark, was also a well-known artist. Many of her brothers and sisters were artists too! These included Victoria Mamnguqsualuk, Nancy Pukingrnak, Peggy Qablunaaq Aittauq, Mary Yuusipik Singaqti, Josiah Nuilaalik, Miriam Marealik Qiyuk, and William Noah. Janet was married to Mark Uqayuittuq, who was also an artist. His father, Luke Anguhadluq, was an artist as well.

Janet Kigusiuq's artwork was known for being bright and bold. She often showed scenes from daily life in her art. These included activities like hunting and fishing. She also drew inspiration from Inuit stories and spiritual beliefs. Many of her ideas came from her childhood experiences. She grew up in a family camp called Kitikat in the Back River region.

Artistic Styles and Materials

Throughout her career, Janet tried many different art forms. She worked with drawing, printmaking, and textiles. She also made beautiful wall hangings.

After her family moved to Baker Lake, she started printmaking. Between 1970 and 1988, her prints were part of the Baker Lake print collections. As she got older, she began to use pencil crayons to create large areas of color. She also used collage techniques. This was partly because she developed arthritis, which made some art forms harder.
