William Patenson was an English Roman Catholic priest. He was born in either Yorkshire or Durham. He was executed at Tyburn on January 22, 1591 or 1592. He is known as a martyr, which means he died for his religious beliefs. The Roman Catholic Church declared him "Blessed" in 1929.

His Life and Faith

William Patenson began his religious training at the English College, Reims on May 1, 1584. He became a priest in September 1587. After his training, he returned to England on January 17, 1588 or 1589. At that time, being a Catholic priest in England was very dangerous.

In December 1591, William Patenson was leading a religious service in a house in Clerkenwell. While he was having a meal with another priest, James Young, officials who were looking for Catholic priests suddenly arrived. James Young managed to hide, but William Patenson was arrested.

Arrest and Execution

William Patenson was taken to the Old Bailey court and found guilty after Christmas. While he was in prison, he spent time with other prisoners. He helped them find comfort and strength in their faith.

Because of his strong faith and his actions in prison, his execution was made even more severe. He was executed in a very harsh way, which was common for those accused of treason at the time. He died on January 22, 1591 or 1592.
