In February 1899, William Propsting started his political career. He became a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly for Hobart. By August 1901, he was chosen as the leader of the opposition. This meant he led the main party that was not in power.

Becoming Premier of Tasmania

On April 9, 1903, Propsting became the Premier of Tasmania. He also served as the Treasurer, managing the state's money. His party was known as the Liberal Democratic Party.

As Premier, he worked to improve the education system. He reorganized the education department and set up a training college in Hobart. However, many of his party's plans to make laws more democratic were stopped. These plans were blocked by the Tasmanian Legislative Council, which is another part of the parliament.

Propsting resigned as Premier on July 11, 1904. He continued to be the leader of the opposition until December 1905.

Later Roles in Government

After his time as Premier, Propsting was elected to the Tasmanian Legislative Council. In May 1906, he joined Sir John W. Evans's government. He served as the Attorney-General and Minister for Education. This government resigned in June 1909.

From April 1916 to August 1922, Propsting was the Attorney-General and Minister for Railways in Sir W. H. Lee's government. He continued as Attorney-General in the next government, led by Mr. Hayes, until August 1923.

In July 1926, he was elected president of the Legislative Council. He held this important position until he passed away in Hobart on December 3, 1937. He was known for doing a great job in this role.
