Early Life
William St Clair was the son of William St Clair, 13th Baron of Roslin. His mother was Alison, who was the daughter of George Home, 4th Lord Home.
His Time as Baron of Roslin
In 1554, William St Clair officially became the Baron of Roslin. This was a big event, and several important people were there, including Oliver Sinclair of Pitcairns and Edward Sinclair of Dryden.
Supporting the Queen
In 1559, Mary, Queen of Scots, chose William St Clair to be a Justiciary for the Lothians. This meant he was a high-ranking judge who helped keep law and order in that area.
William St Clair was a loyal supporter of Queen Mary. He stood by her during the Battle of Langside in 1588. After this, he received a special pardon in 1574 for his actions. In 1573, he was asked about some gold buttons that belonged to the Queen's mother, but he said he had not received them.
A Collector of Books
William St Clair was also known for collecting many old handwritten books, called manuscripts. These books had been taken from the monasteries during a time of big changes in Scotland called the Reformation.
His Family
William St Clair married Isabel, who was the daughter of Ker of Cessford. Together, they had several children:
- Edward St Clair: He married Christian, the daughter of George Douglas of Parkhead, who was the Governor of Edinburgh Castle. Edward did not have any children. Because of this, he decided to give the title of Baron of Roslin to his brother, William, in 1582.
